Meet Alicia: How Fasting Helped Me Reclaim My Life

Hi, I’m Alicia Robinson, a 42-year-old woman, Reiki Master, and part-time RV park staff member and Full-time registered behavioral therapist living just outside of Austin, Texas. I’m also a proud mama to one amazing son who’s almost 20 years old—seriously, where has the time gone?!
Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, I spent 20 years in Chicago before moving back to Arizona for six years. But in 2023, I decided to make a bold change. I packed up and moved to Texas—a state I had never lived in but felt deeply connected to through my mom’s side of the family. It was here, in a place full of unfamiliarity but ancestral roots, that I came to heal, to grow, and to start over.
A Season of Loss and a Breaking Point
My journey here wasn’t exactly smooth. Since 2017, I’ve experienced a wave of deep, personal losses:
My grandfather (on my mother's side) passed away in 2017.
In 2023, I lost my grandmother (also on my mother's side).
Just last year, my last aunt on my dad’s side passed away—and four days later, so did my father.
That final loss shattered something in me. I didn’t even realize how far I had fallen into depression until a chance encounter in the laundry room of the RV park changed everything.
One day, while doing laundry, my neighbor Ameris—who I had chatted with before in the RV office where I work part-time—simply asked, “How are you doing?” And I broke. I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I was overwhelmed, grieving, exhausted, and hiding it all behind a shaky smile.
At the time, I was also working full-time as a Registered Behavior Therapist, and I had just endured a traumatic incident on the job that had spiraled my mental health even deeper into darkness. To make matters messier, I had just come out of a fast-moving relationship that started in January 2025. It burned hot, then crashed hard—but after a couple months of chaos, we’ve managed to remain friends.
From Breakdown to Breakthrough
That conversation in the laundry room was my wake-up call.
Ameris shared that she’s a minister and shaman, and our conversation sparked something in me. She asked if I had ever heard of The Gene Keys, and I lit up with recognition. “Is it like Human Design?” I asked. She explained that while they’re similar, the Gene Keys are softer and more intuitive. My curiosity was officially piqued.
I took the free Gene Keys test that night and immediately ordered the guidebook. That single moment of inspiration turned into a full-on transformation.
Reclaiming My Health and Spiritual Practice
From there, I started returning to myself—bit by bit. I began:
Journaling daily in my manifestation notebook (more on that in a future post)
Cleaning up my diet
Rebuilding a healthy sleep schedule
Practicing Reiki again
And... I started fasting
I had been living primarily off junk, skipping self-care, and barely surviving emotionally. But thanks to Ameris—and another powerful healing session with Justin Divine, a gifted Tarot reader and spiritual healer—I felt a new fire light up inside me.
I started with a 12:12 intermittent fast, and after a few weeks, moved to 16:8. The mental clarity, energy, and sense of empowerment I felt were undeniable. So I decided to share it publicly—on Instagram at first, just to keep myself accountable and maybe inspire someone else. But the more I fasted, the better I felt.
And then it hit me:
This deserves its own blog.
Unfed & Unfolding Was Born
I didn’t have a lot of money to launch anything fancy, so I started basic. I built the site myself. And y’all—it’s the first time I’ve ever followed through and actually launched my own website. I’ve had to push through resistance, self-doubt, and “I’ll do it later” energy. But you know what helped me do it?
Fasting.
Pushing through hunger taught me how to push through discomfort in other areas of my life. I used to think my intuition was warning me not to do things, but I’ve realized sometimes it was actually fear or a soft whisper of “I’m not ready yet.”
And that’s okay. Projects I didn’t finish when I was deep in depression? They probably wouldn’t have turned out the way they were meant to anyway.
But this blog? This feels like me—fully present, clear, and ready to show up.
Tracking the Journey: Mind, Body, Spirit
I’ve since leveled up to an 18:6 fasting schedule, and I’m documenting the whole process. Every day, I take:
A photo of my face, paired with a screenshot of my fast
A weekly full-body photo
A weekly weigh-in
I’m also tracking the mental and emotional shifts in my journal and right here on this blog.
I’m in the process of designing a fasting tracker journal that I’ll be sharing with y’all soon. I want everyone who’s on this path to feel supported—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I’ll also be posting fasting-friendly recipes, tips for easing into intermittent fasting (IF), and resources to support your healing from the inside out.
